Consulting Associate

John believes in the power of empathy and creativity to design better financial services that can help low-income people achieve prosperity. He has guided teams in the Human-Centered Design process from behavioral insights to working prototypes, collaborating with partner organizations to implement impactful solutions for low-income people. John founded the Financial Health program at the nonprofit design and innovation firm IDEO.org. He helped develop services to increase the quality of mobile-money agents for Airtel Tanzania including an agent-commission report and loyalty program, and he helped design an improved digitized bulk-payments experience for coffee farmers in Uganda, in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Previously, John designed an improved customer-service experience for mobile money with Tigo Cash in Ghana and smallholder-farmer centered marketing and digital savings product with Econet in Zimbabwe, both in partnership with the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP). Previously, John served as a news-graphics editor at The Wall Street Journal, where he covered financial, economic, and political news; and he has consulted in information design and data visualization.
