Program Director, TECA

Shirley Mburu is the Program Director for TECA, a venture launcher managed by BFA Global. Her financial innovation expertise has led to the design and management of multiple-year programs in Africa, where she has sourced, selected, and supported financial solution innovators to develop strategies and solutions for improving the lives of underserved populations with a focus on women and youth.

Shirley's expertise in digital payments has made her a key lead in BFA's stream of work. She has collaborated with policy makers and development partners to undertake global assessments of payment systems, strategies, products and use cases to identify drivers, barriers, and opportunities for deepening access and usage.

Prior to her role at BFA Global, Shirley worked for the Centre for Financial Regulation and Inclusion (Cenfri), the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), and the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Her experience analyzing the Kenyan social enterprise ecosystem, with a focus on the agricultural sector, gave her a unique perspective on how financial innovation can drive positive change in underserved communities.

Shirley's academic background includes a Master of Commerce Degree in Development Finance from the University of Cape Town, a Post Graduate degree in Financial Analysis and Portfolio Management, and a Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Accounting from the same institution. Her extensive education and experience have equipped her with the skills needed to excel in her role and make a significant impact in the field of financial innovation.
