Strengthening the resilience of MSEs

Strengthening resilience: Insights from the Strive Mexico program

Micro and small enterprises (MSEs) are vital to Mexico’s economy but face persistent challenges, such as limited access to financial services, digital tools, and support networks. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified these vulnerabilities, highlighting the urgent need for stronger resilience to crises.

The Strive Mexico program, implemented by BFA Global and Fundación Capital with support from the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, addressed these challenges by collaborating with ecosystem actors and testing solutions to enhance MSE resilience. The key findings and strategies are captured in a resilience toolkit and three learning documents to empower organizations supporting MSEs.

Key learnings

  • Digital tools like e-commerce and digital payments improve resilience but remain underutilized by smaller MSEs.
  • Frequent emergencies, like health issues and market shifts, disrupt MSE operations.
  • Financial fragility and limited access to savings and credit restrict recovery from unexpected expenses.
  • Tailored interventions based on MSE size, sector, and maturity can potentially deliver more substantial results.
  • Customer-centered designs, “Tech and Touch” support, and sustained engagement drive the adoption of digital services.
  • Stakeholders would benefit from better resources, tools, information, knowledge-sharing platforms and networking.
  • Self-reported and administrative data can provide a fuller picture of MSE  resilience level.
