Financial health goes beyond access to financial services. It reflects people’s ability to manage day-to-day finances, cope with unexpected shocks, and pursue long-term goals with confidence. This note brings together key lessons from BFA Global’s work under the FinnSalud program, examining how financial health outcomes differ for women and men and what this means for financial institutions.

Drawing on quantitative and qualitative evidence from cooperatives in Mexico, the analysis shows that gender gaps persist not only in access, but also in resilience, financial behavior, and long-term value. Women often demonstrate strong financial discipline and loyalty, yet face structural barriers in accessing higher-value products and building financial security.

Addressing these gaps requires more than expanding access. It calls for intentional product design, improved measurement frameworks, and the integration of a gender perspective into institutional strategies.
